COCKBURN BEGIN THEIR CLIMB (by Michael Bate, Football West) Cockburn City moved off the bottom of the Premier League table by twice coming from behind before beating Perth SC 3-2 at Dalmatinac Park. Second half goals from Rory Feely and Wesley Britz cancelled out a couple of David Onoforo strikes either side of the break before Adrian Webster had the honour of sealing Cockburn’s third league win just five minutes from the end. “I felt we dominated for about 35 of the opening 45 minutes, then fell asleep and gave them a soft goal,” said Cockburn coach Tony Castiello. “I told the lads at half time that if we kept playing the way we started, we’d get something out of the game.” The home team created the first genuine chance when Aaron Dos Santos cut in from the right and from the edge of the 18-yard box let fly with a left-footed strike that rattled Devon Spence’s crossbar. Britz and Feely both had decent half chances before Webster fired a warning shot narrowly high of the crossbar after good interplay between Feely and Jason Dos Santos. Perth grabbed the lead against the run of play on 38 minutes when Onoforo stole in at the back post to tap in a cross that the home defence allowed to run across their 6-yard box. Onoforo nearly added a second soon after when his block on a Paul Natale ballooned up and landed on the bar. Webster and Marc Anthony combined to terrific effect as Cockburn went on the attack after the break. A dipping 27-metres strike by Webster drew a fine save out of Spence, who not long after managed to get to an in-swinging Anthony cross just ahead of the midfielder. It was Anthony who finally opened up the Perth defence in the 58th minute when his clever through ball released Feely to fire past Spence, the shot rolling in off the post. Four minutes later Webster played a corner directly to Anthony who, on the edge of the area, connected with a sweet volley that was kept out by Spence. That save would prove even more significant just two minutes later when Cockburn switched off, leaving Onoforo unmarked to head in at a Robbie Puca corner. A few weeks ago that would have meant game over for the home side but, as last weekend’s win over Western Knights showed, this Cockburn side is made of sterner stuff. They continued to press and in the 78th minute Britz bundled the ball into the net after Spence came off his line but misjudged a cross from he right. Cockburn went ahead seven minutes later, Anthony rolling a free-kick from the edge of the area to Webster who powered it inside Spence’s right hand post. Webster nearly sealed the victory with another in stoppage time but his effort from distance was tipped over. The points gained move Cockburn above Inglewood and out of the relegation zone, while Perth slump from one down to three.

Cockburn v Swan 27/03/10 = United came away from Dalmatinac Park with all three points after a hard fought 1-0 victory against Cockburn City on Saturday. A penalty in the 25th minute from United skipper Brendan Knox proved to be the decisive strike, and although they were reduced to ten men, when Brendan Craig was sent off, they defended desperately to claim their first points of the season.
